The Growth Sector Awards celebrate sectors with the potential for extraordinary economic growth – food and fibre processing, transport, defence and construction technology, new energy technology, medical technology and pharmaceuticals,  international education and professional services which further manufacturing.

Defence, Transport and Construction Technologies

2018 Winner (Transport) - Bombardier Transport Association

Bombardier Transportation is a rail technology leader, from the manufacture of commuter trains and trams to the supply of complete rail transportation systems and system integration. They also provide solutions for signalling, propulsion and control technology, asset management and through-life support.
Bombardier Transportation has been manufacturing in Victoria for more than 60 years, with over 2,000 rail carriages delivered from the Dandenong manufacturing facility.
Bombardier’s investments in the future of local manufacturing include the establishment of a nationally accredited Welding Training Centre in 2015 and partnering with Chisholm, Melbourne’s largest TAFE, to deliver nationally accredited training to over 300 of their trades based employees state wide.

2018 Winner (Construction) - Entegra Signature Structures

Entegra prides itself on designing and constructing buildings for use by a range of industries and applications, such as commercial, industrial, schools, rural, equine, warehousing and distribution. 

2018 Winner (Defence) - Albins Performance Transmissions

Albins Performance Transmissions was founded in 1978 providing a variety of products to the off-road racing motor sport industry including engine performance upgrades, upgraded suspension systems and complete off-road racing vehicles.

In recent years Albins has diversified into the defence supply chain where they have been successful in being chosen as a key supplier into the Hawkei Light Protected Vehicle program, supplying over 20 part numbers through all the stages of development from concept, through prototype, validation and into full rate production. Albins is privately owned and employs around 70 staff. 

2017 Winner - Impresa House

Impresa House is an Australian owned company that manufactures and delivers prefabricated buildings. Located in Melbourne’s west, the company has engineered its buildings for the Australian climate, with products providing improved structural, thermal and acoustic properties.

2016 Winner - MHG Asia Pacific 

With over 45 years of manufacturing experience and leadership, MHG Asia Pacific is a proud and Australian owned multinational and diversified business. MHG manufacturing headquarters have been in Victoria since 1992, with current facilities in Victoria and Thailand.

In Victoria, MHG has two significant and long standing manufacturing businesses – MHG Glass in Geelong and MHG Plastic Industries in Melton. MHG Glass is the exclusive manufacturer of glass for the automotive industry, whilst MHG Plastics is a leading manufacturer of high quality, technical plastic moulded and ‘A class’ surface painted products. 

Following recent diversification activities, MHG has entered the construction sector through the acquisition of Flat Glass Industries, a large scale supplier of processed glass, with manufacturing facilities in Victoria and NSW. MHG brings proven skills and experience in lean manufacturing, customer service, global and local supply chain management and right first time quality and delivery.

2015 Winner - Alstom Transport Australia 

Alstom develops comprehensive and sustainable railway solutions tailored to the needs of rail operators, public authorities and passengers. From rolling stock to signalling, infrastructure, services and complete turnkey systems, the company offers the widest range of high-tech rail solutions in the market.

New Energy Technologies

2018 Winner - Keppell Prince Engineering

Keppel Prince Engineering specialises in the construction, fabrication and maintenance of industrial structures and equipment offering end-to-end solutions across a broad range of industries.
Keppel Prince is Australia’s largest and Victoria’s only wind tower manufacturer. 
The business employs 320 staff at its Portland facility and has a focus on developing and maintaining sustainable technologies such as wind, solar and wave whilst continuing its partnerships with key regional industries, including aluminium, shipping, grain and timber.

2017 Winner - Setec

Founded in 1968, Setec is a family owned company specialising in the design, manufacture and distribution of power management and supply products. Working from their facilities in Knoxfield, Victoria, Setec designs innovative products to specification for a range of industries including automotive, communications, gaming and medical.

2016 Winner - Mil-Systems

MIL-Systems is a Victorian based company founded in 1987 with specialist capabilities in the design and manufacture of power conversion and energy storage systems. More than 70% of sales being product exported to International based customers. 

MIL-Systems' engineers have unique expertise and developed intellectual property in the design of high frequency switch-mode power conversion for high reliability and high performance applications such as Army combat deployable communications through to satellite base station systems.

MIL-Systems also develops and manufactures specialist SCEC Type 1A  security systems incorporating the latest encryption techniques, which are installed in the highest classified security buildings throughout Australia. 

Under an Advanced Manufacturing Co-operative Research Centre (AMCRC) program in conjunction with RMIT University, MIL-Systems has developed and manufactured a new generation solar inverter with reactive power control.

2015 Winner - Millennium Electronics 

Millennium Electronics designs and manufactures microcontrolled-based electronic controls for the appliance, home automation, emerge management and monitoring industries for both domestic and international customers.  

Millennium exports to Canada and New Zealand.

Food and Fibre

2018 Winner - Chobani

Chobani has become Australia’s fastest growing yogurt brand, reshaping Australian yogurts with a uniquely crafted straining process. Chobani Australia also produces the leading Gippsland Dairy brand, including specialty cream products. 
Chobani Australia has driven global innovations, including their ‘on-the-go pouch’ packaging, which was created and launched in Australia in 2013.
In 2017, Chobani Australia was recognised and awarded as a great place to work, and also awarded the supplier of the year by retailer Woolworths. Chobani employs 227 full time staff in Victoria.

2017 Winner - Procal Dairies

Procal Dairies started in 2003 when father and son, Nick and Adam Thyssen, saw a gap in providing quality milk and exceptional customer service into the dairy delivery market. Based in Campbellfield and employing 59 people, this 100% Australian and family owned dairy manufacturing and distribution company is capable of producing over 120 million litres of milk annually, and exports to South East Asia and the United Arab Emirates.

2016 Winner - Andrew Peace Wines

Garacama, trading as Andrew Peace Wines, is one of the largest family-owned and operated wineries in Australia. From its beginnings in 1980 as a contracted processing facility, the business grew rapidly as a result of its investment in exporting Australian wine to the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Since then it has expanded to be one of Australia's Top 15 wine companies, exporting to over 20 countries worldwide.

All of the company’s wine is manufactured on its site in Piangil, using grapes from its Victorian vineyards in Piangil and Robinvale.  Diversification in farming has led to 3000 acres of irrigated farmland over and above the 1250 acres of vineyards in Piangil where both summer and winter crops are grown and harvested for sale to both domestic and international markets.

Innovation has meant that the company has remained profitable in an industry that is extremely competitive. Investment in leading edge production technologies and diversification of wine styles and markets has ensured ongoing success.  

2015 Winner - LangTech International Pty Ltd 

LangTech International (LTI) core is food and fibre processing, where fibre is either sold as a food ingredient or retail food product such as infused fruits or retail fibre products; or recombined back into either juice or water to create a functional, high fibre juice or drink.  

One of the key’s to LTI’s success has been the development of patent process technologies and in-house know-how to improve profitability and quality in fruit extraction and processing. The technology was developed in conjunction with a global research network, led by LTI and Australian teams at CSIRO, as well as Sydney, Melbourne and Monash Universities.  

Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals

2018 Winner - Leica Biosystems

With a mission of ‘Advancing Cancer Diagnostics, Improving Lives’, Leica Biosystems is an international success story that today produces three of the most recognised and successful diagnostic instruments used in the field of cancer diagnostics.
Having grown from a relatively small design and development business specialising in biotech, Leica Biosystems is now a major player in anatomical pathology. Leica Biosystems products include diagnostic and research instruments in the fields of oncology, haematology and life sciences. Ninety per cent of their products are designed and manufactured in their Mt Waverley facility.

2017 Winner - IDT Australia

For over 30 years IDT Australia has brought expertise and innovation to the pharmaceutical sector. Headquartered in Boronia, IDT specialises in high-containment, high-potency manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished drug products for local and international markets.

2016 Winner - MSD Animal Health 

MSD Animal Health Bendigo is a multi-product biological vaccine manufacturing facility that supplies veterinary vaccines through Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan.

The company manufactures approximately 60 products in two broad product groups:  Live Viral Vaccines and Inactivated (killed) Bacterial Vaccines. 

Onsite the company manufactures seeds, medias, antigens and final vaccines as well as performing numerous quality control biological and chemical intermediate and final product testing.

As an innovative manufacturer of high value high technology products and processes using lean manufacturing principles, MSD has established a high performance record and capability to grow supply to regional Asia Pacific markets from its location in Bendigo.

2015 Winner - Fairmont Medical Products 

Fairmont Medical Products entered the competitive medical device manufacturing and direct sales market in 1988 and now exports millions of dollars of devices across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and New Zealand.  

The key to Fairmont Medical Products’ success has been an investment in markets, in people and in research and development to continually deliver innovative and price sensitive devices specific to their customer’s needs.  


International Education Award Winners

2016 Winner - Swinburne University of Technology

Swinburne University of Technology is a leading university in science, technology, innovation, business and design, ranking in the top 400 universities in the world.

Building on Swinburne’s long history of industry collaboration, the University’s ground-breaking Factory of the Future and Smart Structures Lab represent powerful nexus of design, engineering, technology and industry to create a new home for excellence and output in Australian product design and manufacturing.

These Iconic facilities are made up of a cluster of specialist environs with high adaptive capacity.  Equipped with advanced visualisation, design and testing tools, designers have the resources to rapidly create concepts, develop prototypes, test products, and research potential manufacturing methods.

Creating partnerships with industry is integral to all of Swinburne’s teaching and research. A best practice example is the Australian Engineered Anchors and Fasteners Council (AEFAC), which brings together 8 industry partners to develop safety standards and training for industry. Working collaboratively, Swinburne continues to develop new products, education innovations and more productive, sustainable businesses.

2015 Winner - RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct 

RMIT’s Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP) plays a critical and vital role in helping the industry and in particular Victorian SME’s to develop new manufacturing capabilities and become more competitive in global supply chains.  

In addition to a range of partnerships and industry engagement projects with Victorian industries, RMIT is one of four Australian universities that promotes and offers manufacturing as a discrete discipline in engineering. 


Professional Services Award Winners

2016 Winner - Cobalt Design 

Melbourne based Cobalt is an industrial design and mechanical engineering consulting group offering a full range of new product development services.

The group develop innovative and resolved product designs that create wealth for their clients through user centred insights, creative solutions and deep manufacturing knowledge.

Cobalt operates within a broad range of industry sectors, including: analytical and medical instrumentation; commercial, industrial and defence products; transport design; consumer products and homewares; and soft goods such as luggage and footwear.

Relative to other product design groups, Cobalt’s point of difference is the integration of design through the development cycle – from insights into the user’s functional needs and emotional context, to rigorous engineering testing and production know-how.  

As one of Australia’s largest product development agencies, Cobalt manages complex multi person and multidisciplinary projects as well as smaller, bespoke projects and has a global focus with significant off-shore work.

2015 Winner - Dairy Innovation Australia 

Australia’s premier provider of research, development and innovation services to dairy product manufacturers, Dairy Innovation Australia (DIA) provides companies access to innovation facilities and the extensive capabilities of the organisation’s expert staff experiences in all aspects of dairy processing and product and market development.
