The Owner Drivers and Forestry Contractors Act 2005 aims to improve the position of small businesses by providing them with information and support essential to operate a successful business. The Act sets out specific requirements to assist owner drivers to improve their business skills and better understand their cost structures and contracts. Practical assistance for owner drivers 

The Victorian Owner Driver Information Booklet is a practical resource to assist owner drivers to successfully operate a business. Hirers must give a copy of the Information Booklet to owner drivers.  

Understanding your business costs 

Get information on the typical running costs of being an owner driver or tip truck owner driver and the rates typically paid to employee drivers for similar work. Hirers are required to provide owner drivers with the rates and costs schedule that most closely relates to the their vehicle. 

Using written contracts 

Certain engagements must be in writing and must specify the minimum hours of work or income level that the owner driver will receive. The Transport Industry Council has developed a model contract to assist owner drivers and hirers.

Negotiating agents - owner drivers and hirers 

Owner drivers and hirers can appoint a negotiating agent to negotiate contract conditions and rates on their behalf. The Transport Industry Council has developed model instruments  for use.
