Workers in community services, contract cleaning and security will benefit from portable long service leave.
Victoria’s Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme was introduced following the passing of the Long Service Benefits Portability Act 2018. From 1 July 2019, workers in community services, contract cleaning and security will be able to start accruing portable long service benefits.
Businesses employing workers in community services, contract cleaning and security and businesses employing workers who perform work covered by the Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme must register their business with the Portable Long Service Authority between 1 July and 30 September 2019.
This can be done online on the Portable Long Service Leave website from 1 July 2019.
Employers must register their workers for the scheme and each quarter - in January, April, July and October - lodge a quarterly return to the Authority.
The quarterly return will include information about:
- all workers who have worked for the business during that quarter
- the ordinary hours they have worked
- the pay they received during the quarter.
The Quarterly Return calculates the contribution to be made by the employer and is based on each worker’s ordinary pay multiplied by the levy for their industry.
The contributions made to the Authority by employers are then invested by the Authority and will be used to pay workers when they make a claim for their long service.
The Authority will be hosting a series of information sessions for employers throughout July, August and September across Victoria to provide detailed information about the Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme, registration and reporting requirements, and to answer any questions you may have.
