Hospitality Industry Guidelines for coronavirus (COVID-19)

Guidelines and resources to assist cafes, restaurants and other food and drink facilities to reopen

Information on Melbourne's restricted postcodes

Given the increasing numbers of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in particular locations and the heightened risk of transmission, Stay at Home restrictions have been applied to several Melbourne postcodes.

More information about restrictions, including the full list of restricted postcodes, is available on the Department of Health and Human Services website.

If your business is affected by the Stay at Home restrictions in these postcodes, you may be able to apply for a one-off $5,000 grant under the Local Lockdowns Business Support Program.

Summary of restrictions

From 11.59pm on 21 June 2020 restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets may operate under the following conditions:

  • the limit per enclosed space remains at 20 patrons, subject to the one person per four square metres rule
  • groups of up to 10 people can dine or drink together. They can be seated at the same table
  • tables must continue to be spaced so that there is 1.5 metres between seated patrons at neighbouring tables
  • alcohol can be served without a meal when seated
  • bars, pubs, clubs, strip clubs and nightclubs are allowed to open for seated service only
  • retail TABs and TAB facilities inside licensed premises may open
  • venues are required to collect contact details (first name and phone number) of every patron to assist in rapid contact tracing.

To safely resume business, hospitality venues need to:

  • create a plan for their business that takes into account these guidelines as well as guidance from WorkSafe Victoria
  • deep clean the premises before reopening
  • set up the venue to ensure physical distancing requirements of one person per four square metres are met and place tables so that any diners on a neighbouring table remain 1.5 metres apart when seated
  • display hygiene, physical distancing and wayfinding signage to emphasise to staff and patrons the expectation on all of us to stay safe
  • encourage all staff and managers to complete the Victorian Government online coronavirus (COVID-19) training, including ensuring at least one staff member at the venue has completed the training
  • maintain a contact register of all visitors to the venue (first name, telephone number, date and time of visit) including patrons, suppliers, maintenance workers to support contact tracing and store it securely on-site for at least 28 days after the visit.

Training to support guidelines: Operating a hospitality business in a COVID-19 environment

A short free online module to support the Guidelines is available here. It is the Government’s expectation that at least one staff member at every venue will have completed the training. Once your staff are familiar with the Guidelines and a staff member has completed the training you can print this poster out and display it in your venue.

You do not have to complete the training before reopening.
