Simon Dixon worked as an electrician for a boss when, after ten years, he decided he wanted to go out on his own.
'I thought I'd be good at it and wanted the freedom to work for myself', he says. He had started his own business, Sandman Electrics, when his father showed him a story in a newspaper about a mentor who had helped businesses in Marysville get back on their feet after the bushfires.
How he made it happen
'Mentoring was something I'd never considered', he said, 'but Rene, my mentor, ended up being the best thing that could have happened to Sandman Electrics'.
Simon has worked hard at developing his business. He has written a business plan, and thought about some achievable goals and marketing ideas.
Even when he had a few months off work last year with an injury, his business "still ticked over".
'I guess that's the best thing', he says. 'If you can get your business to the stage where you don't need to be there the whole time, you're doing something right'.

This not-for-profit organisation has over 100 experienced mentors from a wide range of industry backgrounds who can work with you to assist your business reach its potential.
