Future Designers Program

Increase collaboration between future designers, educators and industry on real business challenges to deliver innovative solutions using a multi-disciplinary approach and design-led thinking,

Program Overview

Future Designers creates opportunities for education providers to work with Victorian firms and design students on real business problems that are more effectively addressed through a multi-disciplinary approach and where design-led thinking can deliver innovative solutions with a business focus. The program forms part of the Victorian Government’s $10 million Victorian Design Initiatives 2012-15 commitment to support best practice design in Victoria, grow awareness of design, build business capability and foster excellence in design skills.

What you get

Future Designers aims to:

  • expose students (primarily design students) to business skills and capabilities to prepare them for the workplace without impacting on their current course curriculum
  • train students in understanding and solving realistic business problems using design-led thinking in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • encourage Victorian firms to leverage education providers’ design capabilities and expertise
  • provide opportunities for Victorian education providers to collaborate and establish relationships with firms.

How to apply

Education providers take the lead role as applicant.

The Project Proposal should describe:

  • a 'real life' business problem identified by the industry partner
  • a methodology that supports the development of the solution
  • project team composition and capabilities to develop and deliver the solution
  • a budget including how grant funding will be expended and timeframe for delivery
  • matched financial and/or in-kind contributions from each party.

The Industry Engagement Plan should:

  • detail expenditure for additional industry engagement activities relating to the project
  • include budget milestones and timelines for key activities
  • indicate why the activities cannot be undertaken within existing resources (ie why government funding is required)
  • detail how the proposed activities are new or enhance existing activities
  • demonstrate how the proposed activities will provide students with the opportunity to develop workplace-ready skills, strengthen linkages between education institutions and industry and involve new and additional strategies to engage industry partners
  • provide evidence of matched financial contributions, as required, and in accordance with the relevant funding ratio and/or in-kind
  • demonstrate how the proposed activities will meet the Program’s objectives.

  • the proposed project will be completed within a defined period of time, ideally no more than 12 weeks
  • level of industry partner’s engagement in the project and commitment to the project’s intended outcomes
  • degree to which the project requires design expertise
  • extent to which students will be better prepared for future employment
  • demonstration of a multidisciplinary team approach being used to generate an innovative solution with a business focus
  • potential impact of the project’s business solution on operations of the participating industry partner.
