2016 Governor of Victoria Export Awards

The 2016 Governor of Victoria Export Awards were announced on Thursday 6th October at an awards ceremony at Government House.

Ego Pharmaceuticals was awarded the Victorian Exporter of the Year and Worldpoly won the Victoria Export Award for Innovation Excellence. Cyan Ta’eed, co-Founder and Executive Director of Envato was awarded the Victorian Women in International Business Award.

The 12 category winners have qualified as finalists in the Australian Export Awards, to be announced in Brisbane on 23rd November 2016.

Exporter of the Year: Ego Pharmaceuticals

Ego is the largest Australian owned pharmaceutical company specialising in dermatology. From its world class facilities in Melbourne the company researches, manufactures and markets over 120 products which treat and prevent skin conditions and maintain healthy skin.  Ego’s iconic Australian brands include QV Skincare, Sunsense sunscreen, Aqium Hand Sanitiser and Pinetarsol.

Ego began exporting in 1962 to New Zealand, and today exports to 27 nations throughout Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. Export now makes up 40 per cent of net sales and will continue to be a major driver of growth.

Export Award for Innovation Excellence: Worldpoly

Worldpoly has confirmed their position as a powerhouse of innovation, leadership and knowledge in the polyethylene pipe industry worldwide.

The specialised welding equipment which the company produces is used in the agriculture, construction, gas, irrigation, mining and plumbing markets, and Worldpoly has now exported to 110 countries, from Antarctica to Angola, Germany to Ghana, Myanmar to Maldives, Peru to Philippines and Venezuela to Vanuatu.

The company is now producing and exporting a range of equipment that is not only safe, easy to use & durable, but provides the connectivity and future-proof attributes required by today's client base, taking into consideration future technologies such as the Internet Of Things (IOT).

Victorian Women in International Business Award: Cyan Ta’eed, co-Founder and Executive Director of Envato

Recognised as both the Telstra Victorian Business Woman of the Year and the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Australia in 2015,  Cyan Ta’eed is passionate about gender diversity in technology.

Cyan is Co-Founder and Executive Director of Envato.  She started the company in her parents’ garage and together with the other founders Collis Ta’eed and Jun Rung, freelanced on the side to pay the bills until the business became profitable.

Cyan also founded New Day Box in 2013, an initiative that mobilises women to make boxes of skincare and cosmetics for women in domestic violence crisis accommodation.  So far New Day Box has delivered over 5000 boxes to women in Victoria through a network of volunteers.

Agribusiness Award: Schreurs & Sons

Located in Clyde, Victoria, Schreurs & Sons is a third generation vegetable-growing business . Having begun their export journey in 2013, Schreurs & Sons now exports directly to six international markets with both its own product lines and consolidating a range of other vegetables. An ability and willingness to supply year round makes their offering unique, ensuring no supply gaps to their export markets.

Business Services Award: Shopping Links

The Shopping Links network has over 10,000 carefully vetted influencers from 103 countries with a social reach in excess of over 950 million, making their network the fastest growing social media start-up in Australia. 

The company now boasts over 700 brands, with international brands making up over 77 per cent of their client base. Shopping Links has facilitated over 400 collaborations with international high profile brands generating 94 per cent of their overall sales in 2016. 

Creative Industries Award: League of Geeks

League of Geeks makes and sells its games, game sound tracks and extra game content online direct to customers through platform specific stores such as the PlayStation Store, Valve's Steam store, Microsoft's Xbox store and more.

In 2015, the League of Geeks released their debut title, Armello worldwide. Localised into 13 languages the title was launched with critical acclaim and has since been nominated and won praise from some of the world's most respected awards. 

Digital Technologies Award: Envato

Envato is a platform that connects millions of customers with thousands of talented designers, developers, musicians and animators. The company started in 2006 and to this day remain completely bootstrapped, profitable and proud.

Envato have built up revenues in excess of USD$50M per year, with exports accounting for 97 per cent of revenue. On their export journey the company has helped thousands of talented creatives around the world earn a living selling their work and services on Envato’s platforms.

E-Commerce Award: Swisse Wellness

Swisse Wellness is an Australian success story.  From its modest beginning in Collingwood in the 1960s, Swisse has become Australia's number one natural health brand and is rapidly becoming a global brand leader.

Export growth has been largely driven by a successful e-commerce strategy that has seen sales to China increase tenfold over the last two years.  In this time, Swisse has become the number one health brand on the world's largest e-commerce platform Alibaba, accounting for twice the sales of the nearest competitor.

Education and Training Award: Deakin University

Deakin was one of the first Australian universities to open offices internationally, and currently has independent offices in four countries as well as dedicated staff based in Asia, Europe and Africa. The university has developed research and teaching partnerships in more than 100 countries around the world.

Deakin had some stand-out performances in the undergraduate market, with significant increases in market share in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, and Malaysia, while maintaining strong market share in China.

Environmental Solutions Award: Geofabrics Australasia

For over 35 years, Geofabrics has manufactured and marketed a range of advanced geosynthetic products for use in projects across the road, railway, mining, resources, landfill and coastal engineering sectors.

The company has built a network of over 2,000 customers globally and established strong distribution channels into the Asia Pacific, North American, South American and European markets and established a proven track record of product performance, particularly for applications in landfill, coastal erosion and sporting fields.

Critical drivers for Geofabrics' success are its highly-skilled national manufacturing team and its globally-recognised position as a leader in geosynthetics engineering.

Health and Biotechnology Commendee: IDT Australia

IDT Australia is a publicly listed Australian pharmaceutical manufacturing company headquartered in Boronia, Victoria.  For over 30 years IDT Australia has brought expertise and innovation to the development and production of pharmaceutical products for local and international markets.

With operations in Melbourne and Adelaide, IDT is proud to have worked with nine of the top ten global pharmaceutical companies.

Manufacturing Award: A.W. Bell

Established in 1962, A.W. Bell is a third generation family business and is today Australia's leading supplier of investment castings, servicing both national and international customers. A.W. Bell manufactures components for industries including Aerospace, Defence, Medical, Oil and Mining, Construction, and Automotive.

The company’s key differentiators are not only its expertise and innovative methods, but also its' focused upfront customer engagement to foster strong collaboration to ensure their customer's needs are understood and can be fulfilled.

Minerals, Energy, and Related Services Award: Gekko Systems

Gekko Systems offers smart and cost-effective mineral processing solutions to mining companies predominantly in the gold sector. Gekko has offices in Ballarat, Perth, Vancouver and Johannesburg with a new office to open soon in Moscow. Agents are employed throughout Central and South America and West Africa and Gekko is currently negotiating with a number of agents in Asia to capitalise on that rapidly-expanding market.

Over the past 20 years, approximately 75 per cent of Gekko's total revenue has been generated from international clients across 44 countries including Canada, the United States, Morocco, New Zealand, El Salvador, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Myanmar, Mali and Mauritania

Regional Exporter Award: Australian Premium Dried Fruits

Australian Premium Dried Fruits (APDF) are a 100 per cent Australian owned, grown and packed dried fruit processor who are industry leaders in the production of high-quality, premium dried vine fruit.

Heavily investing in developing new markets in Asia has seen the company’s growth-rate increase dramatically in recent years. The Chinese market presents the most exciting opportunity for the Australian dried fruit industry and has the possibility to transform the industry into a highly profitable period of strong growth, a situation that APDF are well-positioned for.

Small Business Award: Cornerstone Solutions

Cornerstone Solutions is a world leader in image-capture and delivery solutions with more than 1300 photoSentinel-branded time-lapse cameras operating across six continents.

Having proven their business model in Australia first, Cornerstone has seen substantial growth in their exports, with international revenue increasing over 700 per cent in the two years to June 2016.

Coupling Cornerstone's excellent cloud-based photo management with a range of content-creation and project-management tools, partners are able to 'lock-in' to photoSentinel as a service, thereby ensuring ongoing and repeat business.
