As Australia’s energy and environmental trading hub, Melbourne is home to the majority of industry compliance buyers and the national energy market. Major compliance buyers based in Melbourne include BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Amcor, Shell and Great Energy Alliance Corporation.
Melbourne is also a centre of excellence for specialists providing monitoring, reporting and verifying services, particularly for the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme.
Climate Change Authority
Melbourne is home to the Climate Change Authority, an independent body providing advice on national renewable energy target emissions trajectories, the Commonwealth Government’s carbon pricing mechanism and the Carbon Farming Initiative.
Carbon Market Institute
Based in Melbourne and established with support from the Victorian Government, the Carbon Market Institute was formed to help Australian businesses meet the challenges and opportunities associated with developing national and international carbon markets. Membership provides access to research, events and training. The Head of Australia and New Zealand for the Climate Markets and Investment Association(CMIA) and International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Australia and New Zealand representative are also based in Melbourne.
