Victorian Design Initiatives 2012-15 is a $10 million commitment to support best practice design in Victoria, grow awareness of design, build business capability and foster excellence in design skills.
Launching in 2013 the Design Showcase will be a series of events and activities to raise awareness about the impact of design.
Through the Design Showcase, leading design studios and other major in-house design teams – such as those found in Victoria’s automotive and aviation industries – will have a chance to share their insights on emerging design themes and techniques with both smaller design studios and potential clients.
In addition to presenting the latest in local design capabilities and developments, the Design Showcase will also expose local designers to leading international trends and potential links into global markets for export.
Developing Local Design
Developing and promoting Victorian designers’ international profile and capabilities will confirm Victoria’s strength and versatility as a vibrant centre of design in the region and increase global design investment in the State.
Recognising that Victoria’s design-related courses deliver design graduates with the necessary technical skills and knowledge, Future Designers improves design students’ understanding of business and the workplace environment to better equip them to contribute more productively and effectively at an earlier stage.
Through Future Designers, young designers will be better placed to develop links with international clients.

Building Business Capability
Business by Design
Business by Design works with ambitious, export orientated firms seeking to consolidate their growth potential and be more competitive. The program helps firms to apply leading design practices and processes to improve their products and services and develop greater market presence. Businesses will become more sophisticated and strategic in their use of design across all business activities including product and market development to deliver greater revenue growth and export capabilities.Design Master Class
Design Master Class offers firms practical steps on how to develop and apply innovative management models and systems to generate sustainable growth. Firms participating in the Master Class will review their business objectives and identify opportunities to develop and apply new capabilities and business models culminating in a design strategy specific to their needs.
Smart Design Vouchers
The Smart Design Vouchers program provides practical assistance to Victorian firms seeking design research expertise to test and improve their products or services. The vouchers will facilitate greater design collaboration between Victorian firms and design researchers to improve firms’ ability to produce more innovative and highly refined products and services for a specific market.Celebrating and Promoting Design
Premier’s Design Awards
The Premier’s Design Awards celebrate and reward both designers and firms for excellence in the development and use of design. The awards highlight the economic, environmental and social benefits of investing in good design as well as showcase the capabilities of the Victorian design sector and of local designers.
