Business Victoria

Transfer of Licences

Transfer of business name

If you change the ownership of a business from one owner to another owner you are required to complete a 'Change of Business Details' form and lodge it with Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV). The form must be signed by the owner who is leaving and submitted within one month of the transfer taking place.

The same form is also used to add another owner (see External Links). No fee is required. A new certificate is not issued unless specifically requested and a separate fee paid.

Transfer of business licences

If you're buying an existing business and need to transfer licences, the Business Licence and Information Service will help you.

The Business Licence and Information Service will identify the government licences, permits and registrations that you need in order to operate your business in Victoria. Alternatively, phone Business Victoria on 13 22 15. It's also worth contacting the local council where your business is situated to check the specific requirements for council permits such as planning, signage or food handling
