About the Victorian automotive industry

Victoria is the home of Australia's automotive industry, with key assemblers, component manufacturers, design houses, toolmakers and other automotive businesses. Victoria's automotive sector is a leading source of research and development accounting for:

  • 60% of the national industry providing:
  • Employment for 35,000 people
  • $3 billion of exports in 2007

Ford, Toyota and Holden all have a large presence in Victoria, along with over 100 Australian, European, Japanese and American component manufacturers, which collectively account for $5.0 billion in annual component production.
They are supported by a number of service operations specific to the industry, including:

  • toolmakers
  • machine tool manufacturers and suppliers
  • three independent design houses
  • a large independent vehicle proving ground

The industry is also supported by a sophisticated education, training and research sector.

Victorian Automotive Manufacturing Action Plan

The Victorian Automotive Manufacturing Action Plan (VAMAP) provides a roadmap for the local automotive manufacturing industry through to 2013, establishing the groundwork for sustained growth into the future.

This $6.7m action plan will help Victoria's automotive manufacturing sector create new sources of opportunity from current challenges. VAMAP forms part of the $245m Building our Industries for the Future package and is underpinned by three elements:

  • A Business Development Program to develop the international competitiveness of companies at all levels of the supply chain
  • Identification of opportunities and facilitation of access by Victorian firms into global supply chains
  • Investment in new technologies including hybrids and alternative fuels.
